Live your best French life in Bendigo and its surroundings

Let's explore 8 ways to enjoy the French lifestyle close to home: c'est parti (let's go)!

1. Grab a French pâtisserie

Bendigo is home to many tasty bakeries but we selected a few of them for their French inspired selections.

Indulge your French cravings in the morning and head to Harvest Deli, known for their delicious croissants, Treacy Pâtisserie for a famous macaron or Bluebird Pâtisserie for a French alfresco experience.

In less than an hour you can also find Johnny Baker in Castlemaine, with French style viennoiseries or the French owned Le Sel in Maldon for breakfast, lunch or dinner authentically prepared by Claudine and Serge.

2. Explore Paris through an exclusive exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery

Exclusive to Bendigo Art Gallery, Paris: Impressions of Life 1880–1925 takes visitors on a journey through the lively and picturesque streets of historic Paris. The busy banks of the Seine, bustling marketplaces, grand boulevards, idyllic public gardens, and the heady atmosphere of bohemian Montmartre are brought to life in more than 170 works of art, couture, and artisan objects.

From the renowned collection of the Musée Carnavalet – History of Paris, the iconic museum of the history of Paris, this exhibition reflects on an effervescent period of great social change, urban development and artistic innovation which shaped modern Paris and continues to capture the global imagination.

3. Dive deeper into French cinema

The unmissable Alliance Française French Film Festival is returning to Bendigo for another year!

From the 19 to 21 of April at Star Cinema, you can find the best in French film. Don’t worry, there are English subtitles, if vous ne comprenez pas (you don't understand French).

4. Fill your mind with French literature

If you prefer literature to film, head to the Bendigo library and pick up a translated novel from renowned French authors such as Leila Slimani, Fred Vargas or even Voltaire. If a comic book is more your style, you can find English translations of the famous Astérix or Tintin.

5. Experience local cheese and wine

France is famous for its vin et fromage, but there’s no need to fly across the world to enjoy it! Across in the popular Heathcote wine region, M. Chapoutier Winery offers up the best of French and Australian wine, open for tastings seven days a week. Or perhaps the French sounding Vin du Van Estate will take your interest.

6. Embrace your artistic soul

Find your inner Renoir or Monet and pick up a paint brush with three hour ‘paint and sip’ classes available with Pinot and Picasso offered locally most nights of the week.

7. Add a French touch to your home

Get inspired by the gorgeous book How to French Country and bring the French lifestyle all the way into the home with new furniture from French-inspired home living store Mon Coeur.

8. Celebrate French culture with an exciting programme of events until 14 July

Bendigo is turning bleu, blanc, rouge, and we are delighted to be part of the celebrations with the Alliance Française French Film Festival, French language courses and workshops. Check out the programme of events and experiences with Bendigo Tourism Board.

9. Last but not least: say oui to French

There is no better way to feel in France than joining Marion for a weekly French escape. Learning a language can help you enjoy new cultural experiences, connect with people, improve your confidence and even delay aging!

Good news: we are now offering classes at Bendigo Library and if you cannot make it that day, we are also online!
