In our third edition of the AFM Festival Ciné Club, we will be screening La Reine Margot, based on the
1845 historical novel by Alexandre Dumas.
Step into 16th-century France, where religion, power, and passion collide. King Charles IX, his cunning mother Catherine de’ Medici, and a divided court set the stage for political intrigue, forbidden love, and the infamous St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.
Margot, the King’s sister, is forced into a politically motivated marriage with Henri of Navarre, but her heart belongs to the dashing soldier La Môle. Poison, betrayal, and deadly court plots unfold, shaping the fate of France, and Margot herself.
We will be joined for discussion on the film by Véronique Duché A.R. Chisholm Professor of French at the University of Melbourne, a passionate cinéphile and collaborator on the Alliance Française French Film Festival 2025.
