PELF: Pass Enfant Langue Française

A new and free initiative

Launched by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs upon presidential request, the French Language Child Pass (PELF) aims to provide free opportunities for French children living abroad, who are distant from the French language, to reconnect with French.
The five Alliance Française in Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth) are particating to the PELF. Students will be allocated to one of these Alliances based on their home address and course availability.

Who is it for?

The program is offered to children who:

  • Are aged 6 to 11 years.
  • Hold French nationality.
  • Reside in one of the target countries and are registered in the Register of French Citizens Living Abroad*.
  • Are not enrolled in a French educational institution.
  • Do not practice or rarely practice French, either at school or even in daily life.

* If the child is not yet registered in the Register, this should not be an obstacle to registering for PELF. The registration in the Register can be done quickly online (more information here). Please ensure that you register in the Register before registering for PELF.

What does PELF offer?

PELF consists of a free offer of French courses provided in an extracurricular context by an Alliance Française or Institut Français.

  • Online courses. Group classes with a maximum of 6 children, divided by level and/or age group.
  • 20 hours of classes, 30 minutes / week.
  • Please note that classes' content is not yet available.

The registration deadline is set for 15/01/2025. PELF will begin in February 2025. Since PELF is accessible within the limits of available spaces (on a first-come, first-served basis) for eligible participants, we advise you to register quickly.


PELF, and what next?

PELF is designed as a springboard to open the path to learning French.

Children may continue the courses at the parents' expense (PELF is currently a free pilot program that will be evaluated before any potential renewal).

In parallel with or following the PELF courses, many free educational resources for children are available to deepen their learning of French:

  • TV5 Monde Plus offers Youth TV programs (cartoons, shows, educational content...) to learn through watching.
  • RFI Le français facile offers stories and riddles to learn through listening.
