Health research for all – inclusive health research for inclusive healthcare
Presenter: Dr Hélène Kammoun
Murdoch Children's Research Institute Chair: Linda Christine Victorian
Department of Health
We believe healthcare cannot be inclusive if health research is not inclusive. Currently, health research is not inclusive by design, with culturally diverse communities, First Nations populations, older people, LGBTQIA+ populations and persons with disabilities remaining underrepresented and sometimes excluded from research. You will hear how health and medical research worldwide has to step up to the challenge to care for multicultural societies and evolve to be able to inform inclusive healthcare.
Our program of work aims to address this persistent problem, which impairs research quality, and the effectiveness and relevance of
interventions, medications and policies developed from research findings.
Trained in France, Dr Hélène
Kammoun
started her career as a medical researcher in metabolic diseases. With a drive to go beyond her own research and enable impact at the
organisation and system level, Hélène has since held a range of research and innovation management roles at the Murdoch Children’s Research
Institute, where she also furthered her interest in the diversity and inclusion space. With more than 15 years’ experience in the medical
research sector, she is well placed to understand the system’s barriers to research equity and has been leading the Health research for all
project for the last two years. She is fostering partnerships across the sector to empower researchers to design and conduct inclusive
health research and advocate at the system level for more support of inclusive research.
Ms Linda Cristine is
the Director of Medical Research for the Victorian Government, a role she has held for the past eight years. Linda’s team in the Department
of Health works with medical research institutes, universities and health services to strengthen Victoria’s global reputation in medical
research. Linda has held senior government positions over the past 30 years, both in Victoria and in New South Wales in the fields of
Health research and policy and in working with disadvantaged communities. Linda holds both a Masters in Bioethics and an Executive Masters
in Public Administration. Most recently, Linda’s role as Director of Medical Research included developing Victoria’s International Health
Strategy which has encouraged global partnerships between researchers in Australia and around the world.
