Fun facts about Bastille Day

1.
It’s really called La Fête Nationale

While you may have heard of Bastille Day already, you might not hear this name when in France! In French, Bastille Day is instead known as La Fête Nationale, meaning ‘The National Holiday’.

2.
The 'Bastille' was a prison

Before the Revolution, the King held great power and would  imprison his enemies in prisons like the Bastille. The storming of the Bastille and the release of its prisoners now represents the beginning of the Revolution and the birth of modern France.

3.

How we celebrate nowadays?

Follow a military parade on
Les Champs-Élysées

Bastille Day is celebrated with Europe’s oldest and largest military parade, down the famous Champs-Élysées. The parade features tanks, helicopters, fighter jets and soldiers marching proudly, as thousands line the street to watch and cheer.

Watch the fireworks

As the day turns to night, fireworks fill the sky across France, including from famous attractions such as the Eiffel Tower or the beaches of the south.

Fireman's party

A party at the local fire station, Les Bals des Pompiers, is one of the most common ways to celebrate the day with a night of drinking and dancing.

Enjoy a day off

As the warmer weather arrives, Bastille Day is a great opportunity for locals to enjoy a public holiday with friends and family.
