Colin Nettelbeck

4/11/2022

The Alliance Française de Melbourne is very sad to announce that Professor Colin Nettelbeck passed away on Friday 21 October.

Colin was the Vice President and then President of the Alliance Francaise de Melbourne from 1977 to 1984 as well as the President of the Fédération of the Alliances Françaises en Australie from 1981 to 1991. He was also the Emeritus Professor of French at University of Melbourne where he held the Chair of A.R Chisholm of French.

Colin remained a great supporter of the Alliance Française and its values.  He was an accomplished jazz pianist and participated in the many jeudi jazzy events organised by the Alliance Française and curated by his son Alexander, also a brilliant jazz pianist.

In 2021, the Alliance Française de Melbourne established the 'Prix Professor Colin Nettelbeck' in honour of his long term contribution to the Alliance Francaise de Melbourne and as a recognition of his legacy in the promotion of the French language and culture, the heart of the Alliance’s mission. The Prix Professor Colin Nettelbeck will be bestowed each year to a winner at the Berthe Mouchette Competition.

We would like to convey our sincere condolences to Colin’s family.
