La Rafle

M "Holocaust scenes"
France - 2010
Roselyne Bosch

In occupied Paris, in July 1942, Jewish children with yellow stars sewn to their clothes, play happily, unaware of impending disaster. Even their parents seem confident that, in a civilised country like France, nothing bad can happen. Nevertheless, the French police, under orders from the Nazis, round-up 13,000 men, women and children one night and place them in a huge indoor cycling stadium. Here a Jewish doctor, Jean Reno, and a Christian nurse, Melanie Laurent, try to help them.

Learning activities include: conversation, listening activities, reading comprehension exercises, writing short paragraphs.

Topics covered include: World War 2; the influence of the past on the present; famous people and historical turning points.
