Typing Accents and special Characters for french

French features a number of letters with accent marks (or diacritics) as well as some special symbols that we don't regularly use in English. These are an important part of learning to write in French - writing them by hand is straightforward, but knowing how to type them is not so obvious!

Especially when learning French online, being able to type these accented letters and special characters becomes a little more important. Although it's still useful to know anyway, as we spend a lot of time typing these days, e.g. if you need to send an email, write a more official document or even just to type a message on social media.

This is why we've put together a little guide to help you with how to type these symbols on Windows or a Mac (click on the images for PDF versions that you can print and keep handy too)! Happy writing, en français!
