Often referred to as the ‘ninth art’, the bande dessinée or ‘BD’ in France, represents an important medium that extends far beyond children’s bookshelves...
From the iconic Astérix, to more contemporary publications like L’Arabe du Futur, comic books have posited themselves as part of French national identity. The Alliance Française is delighted to welcome New Caledonian cartoonist Nicolas Martin for a discussion about life as a comic illustrator – or bédéiste – and what is involved in creating a comic book. Nicolas, who has been publishing his comics since he was 16, will explain the process from the preliminary sketches to the final product, and will talk about what it means to be a comic illustrator in today’s digital age. The presentation will include live demonstrations, and plenty of time for audience questions!
