In the 1870s, France was slowly recovering from a calamitous war and an ultra-conservative republic reigned, imposing its conventional views on all aspect of society, including the Art scene.  Against this sobering background, a group of young rebellious artists decided to by-pass the establishment. They launched a movement that became known as Impressionism and announced the beginning of Modern Art. During this one hour informal talk, Florence Thiriot will introduce the Impressionist movement and its members, presented within the prevailing historical context, as well as a comprehensive list of displaying museums and galleries.  The group included Monet, Degas, Pissaro, Renoir, all joined in their search for freedom from the academic constrains while following their individual pathways.

Impression, soleil levant, Claude Monet (1840 - 1926).
Déjeuner des canotiers, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1880-1881).
