2017 Open House melbourne

A Victorian Heritage listed mansion and a French language and cultural immersion all in one day!

Sun 30 July, from 10am to 3pm
At Alliance Française de Melbourne, 51 Grey Street, St Kilda

The Alliance Française de Melbourne is excited to be part of the  Open House Melbourne 2017 program and to open the doors of its Victorian heritage listed building 'Eildon Mansion' to the community.

On this special occasion, experience the feeling of being immersed in our vibrant and friendly community! Join us on the day and take part in free activities to experience what life is like at Victoria’s best and only French language and cultural centre.

Program of the day:

Self-guided tours & 30-minute guided tours

Eildon Mansion is a sophisticated example of a Renaissance Revival style mansion built in Melbourne in the 19th century. The mansion has retained original internal features such as sandstone, marble and timber mantelpieces, ceiling roses, bay windows, large basement quarters for servants and a cellar. The central section of the building was built in 1850, barely 20 years after Melbourne was founded, making it one of St Kilda’s oldest houses.

Guided tours will run at 11.00am, 12.00pm, 1.00pm and 2.00pm

Coffee & Crêpes

Australia’s first non-profit crêpe van will be on site and will sell coffee and crêpes for a good cause all day. Help them eliminate youth homelessness by purchasing delicious coffee and crêpes from the  Crêpes for Change van!

French learning resources

Language International is a specialist importer and distributor of foreign language resources in Australia and New Zealand since 1980. A main provider for the Alliance Française network in Australia, students and parents will have the opportunity to browse through and purchase items from a wide selection of learning resources.

French second-hand book sale:

We will be selling a large range of French books at bargain prices. If you are a book lover or a French language enthusiast, come and pick up some children books, comic books, adult novels, student books, CDs or DVDs for only 50 cents to 5 dollars. All proceeds will be used to buy new items for our library!

Kids' corner: colouring-in and crafts activities

Throughout the day, budding artists willing to capture the magic of our building will be able to draw and colour-in the beautiful Eildon Mansion.

Vicitors will be invited to recreate the original homeowner's flock of sheep in the garden, using craft materials. A fantastic collaborative exhibit in which everybody can take part!
