Alliance Française de Melbourne & St Kilda Jazz present:
May 30 - Julien Wilson: Our Man in Paris
Melbourne saxophonist Julien Wilson returns to the Alliance Française for a special one-night only tribute show to the king of tenor sax: Dexter Gordon.
As a teenager, Julien Wilson distinctly remembers seeing the lusty virtuoso of bebop saxophone in the 1986 American-French film ‘Round
Midnight’. It was a pivotal moment for Wilson, who has since carved his own career on tenor saxophone, featuring on over 70 albums. While in
Paris in 2017 Julien was introduced to antique French woodwind restoration craftsman, Guy Collins. Guy was Dexter’s repairman and friend for
17 years while they both lived in Copenhagen during the 60s and 70s. The stories Guy shared with Julien about his friendship with the great
man rekindled his love for his first major inspiration.
For this special homage at the Alliance Française Julien has exclusively prepared compositions by Dexter Gordon and assembled a superbly swinging, hard driving band with masters of the style: Mark Fitzgibbon on piano, Philip Rex on bass and Danny Fischer on drums.
