The pieces presented in this exhibition are the result of an artistic residency at Bundanon in the Shoalhaven River area on the south coast of New South Wales. In November and May (respectively) Coline Dupuis and Charlotte Vitaioli were invited as part of the French Artist in Residence (FAR) program, that supports new work, research and collaborations by artists from France, hosting them in purpose-built studios. The exhibition will comprise a combination of works created while on site, using a variety of mediums including drawing, photography and film.

Bundanon, or Life in the Bush

By Coline Dupuis

During Coline’s 6-week residence, she made and edited an experimental documentary using footage from her varied experiences in the Bundanon site. The title is a reference to Walden, Or Life in the Wood, by American author Henry-David Thoreau, an account of his experience of the world in a cabin close to Walden Pond. Taking the form of a sequence of poems, the film offers snapshots of her experience: encounters with other artists in residence, dancers, writers, sculptors, weather events, anecdotes about the painter Arthur Boyd, meanderings in the Australian bush…

Coline Dupuis is a videographer and graduate of La Villa Arson, a school and research institution for contemporary art located in Nice, France. Her work is largely focused on the question of the ‘body at work’. Her films are a pastiche of tender and authentic portraits. Her short films retrace her experiences in artistic residencies, self-proclaimed or institutional, and play with interjecting fictional or experimental scenes in documented accounts.

A ballet for two trees and a bird

By Charlotte Vitaioli

Whilst in residence at Bundanon, Charlotte Vitaioli completed a series of drawings and costume paintings whose inspiration was drawn from the work of Japanese artist Itchiku Kubota as well as the surrounding natural landscape and aboriginal culture. These costumes or ‘capes’ are part of a larger project which is a ballet of living pictures – and that will come to life through traditional aboriginal dance when presented in France next year. For the exhibition at the Alliance Française, Charlotte Vitaioli will present these costumes, as well as some drawings and photos taken on residence.

Charlotte Vitaioli studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Quimper and currently lives in Rennes, where she was born in 1986. Charlotte’s work explores contemporary painting, as well as traditional practices of dyeing, weaving and ceramics, which she combines with performance, video and installation to create a multi-sensory experience. In October 2018, she received a scholarship from the Institut Français to study traditional weaving and dyeing in Japan. She has also been awarded the residence at La Station which will take place in Autumn 2019 in Nice, and is preparing a monographic exhibition at the La Chapelle des Calvairiennes in Mayenne for spring of 2020.
