Hors Sol (Off the ground)
A dancer's photography
By Denis Plassard
Alliance Française Eildon Gallery
3 JANUARY to 2 FEBRUARY 2017
Last September, French choreographer Denis Plassard presented his project ‘Le Bal’ at the Alliance Française de Melbourne, inviting children and adults to partake in a ball under his guidance.
Denis Plassard, the choreographer and dancer, has another passion in life: photography, which he started to practise after attending a workshop by the acclaimed French photographer Claudine Doury in 2015.
“Hors sol” (Off the ground), is an ongoing and long term performance photo project. The idea is simple: the photographer chooses a setting and, the dancer lifts his partners to build a unique collection of portraits of people from anywhere at any time, capturing their spontaneity, their emotion, at a somewhat disconcerting but nevertheless amusing moment.
From the beginning, Plassard imposed himself two rules: his partner had to look directly at the camera and his own face had to be hidden.
This ever-growing collection of portraits is recorded in a virtual gallery. Without exception, every one of his partners has their portrait exhibited and their place in the collection…. And their moment “Hors Sol”.
This exhibition presents 24 photos taken in September 2016 at the Royal Botanical Garden with passers-by as his partners.
