Professor Bruce Scates

The Melbourne Salon on 22 October will be presented by Professor Bruce Scates who holds the Chair of History and Australian Studies at Monash University and is the Director of the National Centre for Australian Studies. Bruce Scates is considered an expert on the Anzacs and Australian military history. A Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, his many publications include Anzac Journeys: returning to the battlefields of World War Two (2013), A Place to Remember: a history of the Shrine of Remembrance (2009), Return to Gallipoli (2006), and Women and the Great War (1997). He has also written a novel, On Dangerous Ground (2012), retracing the footsteps of historian C.E.W.Bean across Gallipoli. In January 2015, he contributed to the special edition ‘L’Australie: naissance d’une nation, des Aborigènes à l’Anzac’ of the highly-regarded French journal L’Histoire.

His forthcoming book World War One: A History in 100 Stories will be launched on Remembrance Day - 11 November 2015.

This illustrated presentation by Professor Scates will give us the opportunity to hear from an expert First World War historian in this Gallipoli centenary commemoration year.
