ABOUT THE ARTIST
Melbourne based, Gillian Hillman began her education studying Economics and quickly realised she needed to pursue her interest in art & design. The opportunity to study Gold & Silver smithing at RMIT was a perfect solution.
A professional artist since 1980, she has taken part in many group & solo shows. Gillian is inspired by the beautiful coloured gemstones from around the world, & pearls from the South Seas and beyond which she mixes with finely textured gold & silver.
Continuing her studies with visiting artists has enabled her to continually learn new skills and bring innovative and fresh ideas to her work that guarantees an ever-changing collection of designs.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Images I captured on Ile de la Réunion in July 2011 are the inspiration for this exhibition. Wandering the streets of St Denis, on Bastille Day, after my husband’s dramatic helicopter rescue from the wilderness of the extinct volcanoes that dominate the island, it suddenly became obvious, that something very exciting was about to happen. That evening, I documented the most stunning fireworks I had ever seen in my life. At the exhibition you can see some of these images blown up to nearly 1metre in height & the jewellery inspired by these images.
