The son of the renowned French sculptor Paul Belmondo, Jean-Paul Belmondo was born a comedian. After studying drama he obtained the breakthrough role in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless in 1960 making him one of the key figures in the French New Wave. However since mid-60s he completely switched to commercial mainstream pictures and became a big comedy and action star in France.

In this short course discover some of Belmondo's best roles in films that contributed greatly to French cinema and encapsulated French culture: 

  • "Week-end à Zuydcoote" (dir. Henri Verneuil,1964) > Study the impact the Second World War had on French culture and society
  • "Leon Morin Prêtre" (dir. Jean-Pierre Melville, 1961) > Learn more about the concepts of faith and religion in secular France
  • "Stavisky" (dir. Alain Resnais, 1974) > Discover how financial corruption affected French society and politics in the 70s
  • "L’homme de Rio" (dir. Philippe de Broca, 1964) > a comedy full of romance, packed with actions, Spielberg's favourite movie! 
  • "Le Doulos" (dir. Jean-Pierre Melville, 1963) > film noir who inpired many of Scorsese's movies
  •  "Pierrot le fou" (Jean-Luc Godard, 1965) > study the French Nouvelle Vague

In this short course you will discover some of Belmondo's best roles in six films that contributed greatly to French cinema and encapsulated French culture.
