Since its creation after WWII, the Festival de Cannes has become much more than a simple film festival: it embraces change and anticipates societal movements.
In this class, we'll talk about the most famous Palmes D'Or recipients, with recent movies such as Dheepan (2015), La Vie D'Adèle (Blue is the Warmest Colour, 2013) or Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), the absolute classics Le Salaire de la Peur (The Wages of Fear, 1953) La Dolce Vita (1960) or Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, 1964) the multiple award directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Emir Kusturica or Michael Haneke, and the international juries with artists like Jean Cocteau, Fritz Lang and Jeanne Moreau.
We'll also study the most controversial moments which have shaken up the festival, such as the 1968 events with New Wave directors Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, but also with the scandals generated by movies like Nuit & Brouillard (Night & Fog, 1956), La Grande Bouffe (The Big Feast, 1973) or Under The Sun Of Satan (1987).
And of course, we'll cover the glamourous side of Cannes: from the glitzy star studded red carpet to the Palais itself, we'll discuss why Cannes has become the most prestigious film festival in the world.
